Target group

  • Officers in Charge of Engineering Watch,

who wish to improve their knowledge and understanding of the operation and control of the machinery installation of a modern merchant ship using and Engine Room Simulator specified as one method of demonstrating competence in Column 3 of tables AIII/1, except the Function „Controlling the operation of the ship and care for the persons on board at the operational/management level“.

Objectives of the course

To gain knowledge and skills related to operation, supervising and monitoring the safe operation and control of ship's machinery in accordance with A-III/1 of STCW code.

  • Familiarization with the use of instrumentation and controls used in the engine rooms of modern merchant ships;

  • Awareness of the need for proper pre-planning, the use of checklists and of the timescale involved in starting up propulsion plant machinery;

  • Experience in identifying operational problems and trouble-shooting;

  • The ability of logical decision making which promotes operational safety.

Course contents

  • Maintain a safe engineering watch;

  • Operate main and auxiliary machinery and associated control systems;

  • Operate fuel, lubrication, ballast and other pumping systems and associated control systems;

  • Operate electrical, electronic and control systems.

Entry Requirements

  • Passport

  • National Licence of Officer.

In this course the participants should gain the knowledge and skills of:

  • Operate fuel, lubrication, ballast and other pumping systems and associated control systems;

  • Operate electrical, electronic and control systems.

Training approaches and equipment:
Lessons are given using PowerPoint presentations, practical tasks are conducted remotely on the latest version of Engine Room Simulator developed by Transas – ERS 5000.
Different types of ships (Tanker, General Cargo, Ro-ro, LNG, etc.) are available. Different types of engines
(2- and 4-stroke diesel engines, Steam and Gas turbines) are available.
